5 Years of LILA, The Home Kitchen Composter
VCycene was founded in 2021 with the vision to create an innovative way to reduce food waste. Our goal was to facilitate and integrate composting into everyday life while decreasing landfill waste and promoting healthier ecosystems. The company turned this composting idea into our core product: LILA.
Unlike dehydrators that dry out food scraps, LILA is a composter that uses artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, and engineered microbes to turn food scraps into nutrient‑rich fertilizer in 7-14 days. These elements help users keep organic waste from landfills and produce high‑quality compost while making sustainability part of daily life.
By turning waste into Category A compost instead of sending it to landfills, the device helps lower methane emissions and supports a circular food economy. LILA is designed to help kitchens, offices, communities, businesses, and municipalities transform organic waste through smarter composting solutions. LILA turns household kitchen scraps into compost you can use to grow your plants, lawns, and gardens.
From Prototype to Product
LILA has tested multiple prototypes, taking in feedback and constant refinements of its design during its development stages. Early beta testers highlighted usability issues that led to cleaner and smarter indoor composting.
Finally, LILA has been created. These devices were tested in homes and offices to refine usability, improve performance, and ensure that the composting process would fit seamlessly into daily routines.
Partners and Collaborators
Our partnerships and collaborators have shaped LILA’s progress. VCycene’s growth has been accelerated by collaborative support at VentureLab, The Township of King, and The District Municipality of Muskoka for helping bring our vision to life. As VCycene continues growing, LILA has been mentioned in various press releases and articles.
LILA has been showcased at sustainability expos and at CES 2025, where we were honoured to have received the House Digest “Best of CES 2025” award. The Government of Canada and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office have highlighted the company’s contribution to cleantech and food‑waste reduction. Students and researchers at McMaster University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Niagara College, George Brown College, and Seneca Polytechnic have also helped test features and inform product improvements.
Finally, to add to our featured stories, last week, USA Today wrote an article celebrating LILA’s 5-year milestone achievement. We want to thank our partners and collaborators who have supported VCycene as we continue to grow.
The LILA Team and Community
We want to thank everyone who has been part of the journey: our team, partners, supporters, beta testers, and the growing LILA community over the past 5 years, for helping VCycene evolve as a company.
Hearing how LILA has become part of people’s everyday lives continues to inspire us. As one member of the LILA community shared: “It feels like you're making this beautiful soil and compost." - Mike & Caroline (Verified Buyers)
At VCycene, we aim to create a lasting positive impact on society and the environment. Empowering communities to embrace eco-conscious practices with confidence.
As we are grateful for the experiences and accomplishments over the past 5 years, we are excited to see what more is to come as we continue to advance the future of smart composting technology.
Thank you for sharing the LILA journey. Cheers to our next chapter of innovation, sustainability, and turning food scraps into treasure.
